For cable operators, there are two things always in short supply in the headend: rack space and time. As the second largest cable MSO in the United States, Comcast maintains a network with approximately 60 million households passed. Keeping up with growth means constantly adding more DWDM channels to feed more nodes, to serve more customers-all from a finite amount of rack space.
